The Pole Wanderer and some other interesting theories behind our little extended summerfest - not that any one is complaining about it...maybe everyone besides mother nature that is oh and the die-hard snow people...
This is just one of the theories lurking around causing chaos. Not to mention, this theory (like several theories of it's kind) is followed with much criticism and doubt as the potential cause behind our extended summa daze. Still, pretty interesting to mull over in your mind though!

"True polar wander is a solid-body rotation of a planet or moon with respect to its spin axis, causing the geographic locations of the North and South Poles to change, or "wander". In a stable state, the largest moments of inertia axis is aligned with the spin axis, with the smaller two moment of inertia axes lying in the plane of the equator. When this is not the case, true polar wander will occur: the planet or moon will rotate as a rigid body to realign the largest moment of inertia axis with the spin axis. (yes from wiki don't sue me...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_polar_wander)"
I certainly like the sound of the poles just taking off on their slippery little legs to explore what the other half of their body looks like!
Even though it sounds intriguing, apparently this pole gallivanting could have very serious side effects, one of them being drastic temp changes. Luckily, according to Geophysicist Ronald Merrill, hosted last year by the good Mr. Ira Flatow, on his wonderfully mind beefing NPR segment, Science Friday, "the last time was 780,000 years ago. And during that reversal, which took about four or five thousand years, the intensity never went to zero. So some of the disasters that you see portrayed in TV and movies are not accurate" (which I think we all knew anyways right? Right?)

If this bit of rambling perked your ears please, listen (or read) to this entire episode of Science Friday "Following A Wandering Pole"
